About Matthew Nuzum

Most people call me Matt, however on the Internet I’m known as newz (pronounced new-zee, not news or new-zed) or newz2000. I currently work for John Deere’s ISG (Intelligent Solutions Group) as a “UX Developer”, meaning that I have a software development background and work with developers, testers and designers to help make our software easier to use. I’ve also worked for Canonical, Ltd, the makers of Ubuntu Linux and several startups.

I love to write and I love to write code. I love to help people learn and I love to present and teach. I’m deeply involved as a leader of Des Moines Web Geeks, a user group targeting front-end web developers in the greater Des Moines area. I firmly believe in mentoring as a way to share knowledge and help the next generation. It is how I was able to enter the web development field and I’ve helped several others since then.

I’ve written a novel, but I’m still fine-tuning it. I’ve written and ghost-written much non-fiction material and I’m working on two non-fiction self-help books. I’m expanding my experience by writing short and ultra-short fiction. Some of my favorite books are the Lord of the Rings series, Ender’s Game (and the Shadow series), Mistborn Saga, Wheel of Time series, Mere Christianity and How Should We Then Live?

I live in Des Moines, Iowa, USA (actually, the little town of Ankeny adjacent to Des Moines), which is pretty near the center of the US. I am a 6 hour drive straight west from Chicago. I’m in the Central US time zone, known as CDT in the summer and CST in the winter.

I try hard not to keep it a secret: I’m a devout Christian and believe in the inerrancy of scripture (but note that I don’t believe in the inerrancy of wikipedia). I believe that all Christians are called out to tell others about Christ and I desire to use the web and written word to do that. For more details please review my statement of faith.
