your post helped put things in perspective. It would appear this is a glitch in the PDF export libraries, since Xfig manages to create perfect bitmaps - well, its design model is simpler than Inkscape, that may also be the case. Since I embed my diagrams later in LaTeX documents, I save the Inkscape doc as pdf and the result is quite good.
