“Boost Server Utilization by 60%” reads the VM Ware ad. Hey, just what I want! My servers running at 100% utilization. What happens when you have an unexpected spike in activity? To me, it sounds like a silly way to make sales.

I think that what they’re saying is, “hey, your servers sit around doing 99% nothing for most of the day. Use our product to combine multiple servers into one and then you won’t have all this servers sitting around doing nothing! Hey, if you’re going to own a server, it might as well be working around the clock!” However, this makes sense only to bean counters. (not that I have anything against bean counters) Server admins know that when your servers run at over 20% average utilization people start to complain. Oh well.
