Wow! What a great writeup, Matt! Looks like I don't have to do one for myself; I'll just link here. ;)

My favorite presentations were probably Lane Becker and building Basecamp. They generated the most "ah ha" moments for me. I didn't get as much out of the module-specific presentations because I've already spent a fair amount of time with them already. All good stuff though.

You had a few ??'s in the CCK summary. I'll just confirm what you probably already know. The automatic content generation is part of the Devel Module. I think it is a MUST HAVE... especially for themeing. The Contemplate Module is neat for allowing you to change how things display in a point-n-click way, but I'm not sure how it would fit in a broader workflow. And finally, I'm not sure what "node save" is.

BTW, it was great to meet up with you again. We should get together for lunch sometime.

I think I agree with ultimike -- none of the presentations really focused on usability -- but it's definitely a hot topic in Drupal right now. I actually made usability a focus on my keynote at BADCamp, but I didn't think to put anything about usability into my Views talks. There's too much controversy of the usability of the Views 2 UI and I personally do write things for the site builder and not so much the site user, and there's a huge array of areas where usability can be addressed and I think we will work on that as time goes on.

I've been reading up on SparkFun. So much to learn.

It's surprising that there wasn't more talk about usability at the conference. It is my understanding that usability improvements will be a major part of Drupal 7. In addition, I think the usability of Views has been improved in version 2 - there is even a new SimpleViews module that makes is dead-simple to build, well..., simple views.

Then again, this was more of a "using Drupal now" conference rather than a "improving Drupal" conference. Regardless, I think it is safe to say that usability is a hot topic in the Drupal community right now.

Great writeup - thanks for taking the time to post it.

Matt, we went to almost the same sessions, and I am impressed by how you captured the essence of each one. The only one I found disappointing at all was the one on themes. What a waste! I went in thinking that I knew nothing about themes. I came out realizing that I knew more about themes going in than I had learned in that session.

You (and others) who missed the session by Eric Gunderson might want to check out the video of it. He was dealing with the integration of geographic data with maps. (It was the one with "pandemics" in the title.) Nice Maps is a cool module if you need to do that kind of stuff. At a more abstract level, the process he was using could be applied to relate any data on the Web to data you have in Drupal.

There were lots of oohs and aahs about Eric's maps, but I was actually more impressed with the interfaces he created, using Admin Views, for content managers to do their work. I'll need to watch the video myself to see if I really saw what I think I saw, but it seemed to me that he had essentially created a WYSIWYG editor for his content managers. If I can make it so my content managers don't have to know what they're dealing with on the back end, then I'm not worried about how easy Drupal is for me to use. And Eric's interfaces made it look like the content managers don't even have to know that the back end is there!

On top of that, the advanced help they're encouraging developers to build into their modules really makes my end of it easy.

Thanks for your summary and comments. Interesting reading, and a great resource!

Cliff, sounds interesting. If you (or anyone) can give more information about this feature, I am thoroughly interested in it. I feel so bad for one particular user I have... she really is having a hard time doing her job and I want to make things easier on her. I'll check out that presentation when the videos come online. I'm not that interested in mapping but I'd love to know how to customize or create custom forms for site management.
