This was a great post, Matt! I run into these problems sometimes, but as yet had not really devised any good ways around them. That snap-to-grid thing will come in handy.

Matt,

I enjoyed your above post on the fuzzy lines and text in web graphics. I too have come across this phenomenon and find myself spending hours figuring it out. Some of what you mentioned I've tried, though the contrast bit I had not thought of. Thanks for pointing that out. *smiles*

Also thank you for the reminder that it doesn't have to be absolutely perfect. I find myself spending hours on graphics when it doesn't take me that long to create a graphic, the perfectionist in me comes out in spades in web and graphic design.

Tina, I know exactly what you mean about being a perfectionist sometimes. You can get frustratingly close-but-not-quite-there and before you know it, the day is gone. :-(

Nice idea for your website (DesignNewbie), I look forward to seeing it as you add more content there.

Hi Matt,

your post helped put things in perspective. It would appear this is a glitch in the PDF export libraries, since Xfig manages to create perfect bitmaps - well, its design model is simpler than Inkscape, that may also be the case. Since I embed my diagrams later in LaTeX documents, I save the Inkscape doc as pdf and the result is quite good.

Hi,

Nice writeup on this problem. Your solution is good, but this has something that's always bugged me in Inkscape -- that it requires so much manual intervention just to get a sharp-looking line. Especially when you've got more than a few objects in your design with straight lines.

As a result, I've created an Inkscape plugin to solve this problem much more conveniently. You can have a look and download it here: [http://code.google.com/p/pixelsnap/]()
