Difficult English Question of the Day

I frequently talk to Ubuntu community members, especially those responsible for community websites. Many of these I talk to don’t speak English natively. Here’s an interesting question: “I can’t understand the differences between see, watch and look… can you explain it?”

If you think about it, those words all deal with different aspects of sight. I chose to answer it this way:

Watch implies something passive, such as “watching a football game.” Look is something active, such as “looking for your keys.” See is something involuntary, such as when you “see a book while walking past the bookstore.

Hi Miguel!

By the way, it’s far past time for me to get a new theme for my blog. I’ve been saying that for about a year now, so it must be true. Maybe I’ll do it by the end of 2006…
