5 Points of Calvinism: “essence of Calvin’s philosophy is that God is sovereign in all things“. I would agree with many that a there is an unfortunate lack of emphasis on the sovereignty of God in present day evangelism, and much more importantly, society at large. I do not wholly agree with the 5 points of calvinism as they have been explained to me, but my disagreements are on very minor parts.

Instead of focusing on calvinism and reformed theology, let’s focus on the negative impact the de-emphasis of God’s sovereignty has had. First, is there a de-emphasis? Yes. 75 years ago, the 10 commandments were considered good rules to live by, even if one did not subscribe to either Judaism or Christianity. In today’s society, law suits erupt any time the commandments are found in a public place. Need more examples? Moral relativism has permeated society completely. Wither something is right or wrong is wholly dependent upon the circumstances which surround the incident. Another example is the war between creation and evolution. Science, blinded by the supposed evidence in favor of Darwinian Evolution, has no conclusive proof at all to back what is taught in schools today. Supposition and theory pile atop each other to form a loosely knit theory that is actually being explained as a fact in some textbooks, when in essence, it’s merely the best guess of someone who decided they did not want a god.

So how did it happen? It started when a generation of baby boomers were not taught an in-accurate biblical image of God, Jesus and sin. Of those that were taught, many failed to adequately relay that understanding to their children. The first generation of those not being taught saw the religious beliefs of their parents as a facade, a routine and/or hypocrisy. This caused an aversion to religion and a rebellion against that which was taught as their parents religion.

Of course, the human soul knows that God is real and therefore longed to have that void fulfilled. Having rejected Christianity (which really wasn’t true Christianity, but merely a shadow of the truth) they turned instead to mysticism, cults, materialism, sex, “success” in some arena, drugs and etc. Each of these things that they turned to brought with it a series of social and cultural problems. Here are some examples:

Materialism: Increased slavery to debt, financial irresponsibility, dual income families, busier lifestyles. Worst of all, we now have an economy that is dependent on our voracious spending.

Sex: Sexually transmitted disease, unwanted pregnancy, abortion, low self esteem and striving to change your appearance to look younger, thinner or more shapely. This has brought about the concept, “Sex sells,” which has now, as of 2004, permeated nearly every aspect of the media. Additionally, this has perverted society’s view of what is “attractive” to such a point that it’s impossible to look “good” naturally. This distorted view causes depression among those who can’t afford plastic surgery or do not have success with the “new ultra slim down you-can’t-honestly-fail-this-one diet.”

If the world trusted God and the Bible when it comes to Sex, sexually transmitted disease such as AIDS/HIV would not even be a blip on the radar. Abortion and unwanted pregnancy would decrease dramatically.

This is just a small representation of the effects of a godless society. A complete list would be beyond comprehension to most today, and would read more like a fantasy novel than real life. Does that mean it’s wrong, old fashioned and not worth pursuing? No, not at all. But I do think it’s clear that society as we know it will continue to get worse until like a balloon that is over inflated, it will burst and the result will be something completely different. I expect this will be either fulfillment of end-times prophesy or a complete upheaval of western civilization.

That’s OK, I’ve read the end of The Book and guess what? Jesus wins in the end.
