AVG Anti-Virus: “AVG Anti-Virus 7.0 has been released”: AVG by Grisoft is a great, affordable antivirus program. For a year or two I’ve been using the free version which includes a free plugin to Outlook and Outlook Express. Well, just recently we deployed the Network Edition. I have to admit, for hundreds or thousands of dollars less than other major antivirus providers, it sure is a good deal. From it’s central console we can automate the updating process, see who has and hasn’t run virus scans lately and view a report about any viruses that were caught.
The organization I’m consulting with has had a very bad problem with viruses in the past, but since installing this there has not been a single virus issue. AVG captured three viruses last week that users have inadvertently opened.
Just two comments: 1. The support is not the best. Grisoft appears to be located in Eastern Europe and when we e-mailed them about installation issues the replies were not Vera helpful. On a positive note, the very next day a software update came out that addressed our problems, so I guess that’s a good enough solution. 2. Some people like the fact that outgoing e-mails get a message attached to it that says “Verified Virus Free by Grisoft AVG”. If you don’t like it, it’s very easy to turn off. Simply go into the AVG options and you’ll see checkboxes that say “Certify Outgoing Messages” and “Certify Incoming Messages”. Remove the checks and you’re done.
