AVG Anti-Virus: We like AVG. It’s a good, easy antivirus program that does everything we need it to. And unlike our previous antivirus system, this one does not get uninstalled or corrupted by viruses.
However the office were I’m working for now has about 25 people sharing a single 56k modem connection to the Internet. Despite our repeated attempts, we cannot get the network edition to update all the clients from a single share. Instead, every client attempts to do it’s automatic update from the Internet. On top of that, they use some mechanism to defeat our caching proxy. This brings our Internet connection to a screeching halt.
We’re getting ready to network our campus (with wireless) that is about a kilometer in length. That will bring an additional 20 or so computers onto the network. Affordable broadband internet access is not availble due to our location away from town and quite a distance away from the main road. So I guess we’ll add another modem.
Really, with a good caching proxy server and banner ad blocker (banner ads were using over 50% of our http bandwidth!) we get by very nicely. Our biggest unwanted bandwidth users now are Windows auto-update and Quick Books.
